True Life: I'm at UNC

Somehow, amidst listening to Florence + the Machine Shake It Off on repeat (my roommate isn’t here at the moment, you see) and debating whether to watch Deathly Hallows Part 2 or Gossip Girl while I do my homework tonight, I decided to type up this blog…as if I’m not mentally doing enough right now.
(Side note: my first lesson to you all is to always put homework first. Always. Tell your parents I said UNC puts education first…even though the relationship between Blair and Chuck might be taking another dramatic turn — watch out Louis, fight for your woman! — understanding astronomy is more important…)

My name is Ashley Spruill, and I am a very conflicted freshman studying English (GO WORDS!) with a Spanish minor here at Carolina. I’m torn (ha! in more ways than one) between double majoring in Communications or Journalism with a concentration in Public Relations. I hail from a small-ish town known as Fuquay-Varina just outside of Raleigh where camouflage is the new black and we build a John Deere dealership next to preschools (true story, but they better watch out for those crazy three-year-olds with the urge to cut some grass) — and I say these things with love.

But enough about me, I’m here to help you. It’s almost Thanksgiving and words cannot explain how excited that makes me to add the feast of all feasts to my list of THINGS I LOOK FORWARD TO WHEN IN COLLEGE. Time flies, it’s true, because there are only a few more days until the end of the semester. Strange, how just last year, I had no idea where I would be at this time and now here I am writing to all those now in my place. Two words of advice: deep breaths.

As my time at Chapel Hill progresses, I’ve been mentally keeping track of some things I wish I knew before coming here (despite living in NC, I grew up close to NC State’s campus, so Chapel Hill news never reached my ears until I said YES to my acceptance). So as you countdown the days to college (whichever it may be) I have for you a short list of things you should do to prepare (although most will pertain to UNC, feel free to take this advice anywhere):

•Sleep is good. Sleep is important because it allows your brain to take a break so that it can later perform at its optimum level. Do not lose out on sleep.

•Food is good. Do not skip entire meals because the physical effects it will have on you will not be worth it (and if that cutie next to you in class hears your stomach growl with hatred for your neglect, you will live to regret it). If you must study, multitask: study and eat. No, it doesn’t make you weird, it just means you’re in college.

•Watch. Out. For. The. Bricks.

•Pack lots of underwear. Sound like useless advice? You won’t think so when you’re spending money to do laundry for the third time in a month because you keep running out…

•Learn the bus schedule…or which bus actually stays on campus when you get on it.

Of course, I could list hundreds of things I’ve learned (and I will add more on my next post) but I don’t want to overwhelm all of you at one time. I just want to leave you with one more piece of advice: enjoy your last year of high school at the top of the food chain. Go to prom, stuff freshmen in lockers, play an appropriate and 100% legal school prank, whatever floats your boat. Don’t stress, and if I miss tonight’s Gossip Girl, don’t tell me what happened, I hate spoilers.

Indecisively Yours,

Ashley Spruill
